    Bones and Muscles

A massage stimulates blood flow and allows natural tonality in the muscles so that healing and balance can occur. Muscles attach to bone and when they are contracted they effect joints. For example, the biceps attach at two places on the shoulder blade, run down the front of the upper portion of the arm and attach to the radius (one of the bones in your forearm). Therefore when it is contracted it can manipulate the shoulder joint, the elbow joint, and the distal and proximal radio-ulnar joints (located in the forearm). A massage on the bicep indirectly effects the functionality of those joints.

Chiropractic works the exact opposite. If a joint is out of alignment then there is undue strain on muscles, soft tissues and possible nerve entrapment. When a Chiropractor puts bones back into their proper place he or she indirectly effects the function of the muscles. But chiropractic isn’t all about putting things back into place, it is also used to maintain mobility with in the joints and slow down the progression of disk degeneration and cartilage wear and tear.

I have been working in conjunction with chiropractic for nearly three years and I believe that the combined use of massage and chiropractic have many benefits to offer and work very well together.

How to become pain free

June 12th, 2010

  1. Hydrate yourself with clean, fresh water-Water is a neccesary componet in every process in the body. Your vital organs depend on water most of all and when you are dehydrated, they pull the moisture from your muscles which results in tight muscles, muscle cramps/spasms, and your chances of tearing a muscle increases. Whats the difference between beef jerky and a juicy steak?…The answer is water.
  2. Limit your intake of toxins- Drinking alcohol, smoking, drugs (prescription, over-the-counter and recreational), unhealthy foods, pesticides and anything else that toxifies your body taxes your immune system, damages organs and effect your over all well being. Imagine running your car day in and day out with a dirty air filter and never change the oil, eventually parts are going to fail and your car will cease to run.  Toxins also get stored with in your muscles and is a factor in muscle pain and trigger points (muscle knots)
  3. Get plenty of restfull sleep- Your body does most of its healing during the hours of slumber. Studies suggest that sleep is equally important as diet and exercise. If your body does not receive adequate rest then its not functioning at optimum performance and vital healing is severely diminished. Sluggishness and lack of coordination greatly increases your chances of injury.
  4. Stretch daily- Next time your cat or dog wakes up take a moment to observe what their first action is. I have never seen my dog wake up and not stretch because he instinctively knows the value of having limber muscles. Stretching prepares your body for the demands of everyday life. When stretches are performed on a regular basis your muscles become much more pliable and the tensional networks become more balanced which decreases your chances of injury. Consult a qualified health care provider who can determine which stretches are best for you.
  5. Exercise daily- The contracting of muscles and the flexion and extension of joints act as a pumping mechanism. When a tissue is compressed or contracted all the fluids escape from the area. Then when it is released, fresh blood rushes back into the tissues. It is essentially “out with the bad, in with the good”.  This helps the body to heal and prevents future injuries.
  6. Maintain low levels of stress- Stress is a very important part of the human system. If you were walking through forest and a mountain lion jumped out, instantly, your heart rate would increase, hormones would be released and your muscles would contract. You would either run away, fight off the lion or become his next meal but either way the stress would then be over. Stress is the bodies way of helping us to get out of undesirable situations. But now days we don’t worry so much about lions, instead we stress about paying our bills on time or hungry kids in third world countries. That type of stress is never ending and the long term effects begin to manifest in disease and dysfunction. Massage therapy, meditation, getting in touch with natural and many other activities have been shown to lower stress levels. Take some time to review what stress you out and figure out ways to manage it.
  7. Always consult a health care provider- Pain is often complicated and the cause varies from person to person. It is important that you know why you have pain because some times its not as it seems. Some one with pain shooting down their arm could have a pinched nerve that is easily treated but it could also be a heart attack that could result in death.
